Is that waste from a 1 1/2 bowl sink that was there before? If so, it's not suitable a needs replaced with a setup specific to the new sink.

yes that's correct. that's kind of what I am asking.. I have been browsing screwfix site and cant find what I need to do the job.. there's also a dishwasher waste there to consider as well.

ah wait.. I already have one of those - I just need a compression to push fit adapter - maybe a flexible one.. I'll keep browsing.

Fit this http://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-sink-washing-machine-trap-white-40mm/12794 to your sink waste outlet. From there run a pipe across to above the existing outlet, drop down with a 90deg bend, and join onto existing pipe with a compression bend. http://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-wc11-universal-compression-waste-bend-90-40mm/35203 If that doesn't reach, extend slightly with a bend and join with a coupling, http://www.screwfix.com/p/floplast-...aste-straight-coupler-white-40mm-x-40mm/11980

Push fit pipework and fitting are not always compatible between different manufacturers.

ah right! so does normal 40mm pipe work with compression fittings? I thought you had to use a special compression pipe.

also - the first 90 degree bend you refer to.. should i use one of my pushfit 90's? and if so why not use one for the connection to the house waste outlet?

Compression waste fittings are universal, will join any pipe of the right size. Solvent weld waste pipe and fittings are compatible across the manufacturers. Push fit pipe and fittings are NOT. (e.g. Marley may not fit Osma, Floplast may not fit Polypipe etc.)

If you've bends that will fit what you already have there, (and wont leak), then by all means use them to fabricate something to suit your requirements.
