I'm about to put the finishing coat of lime and sand on the internal walls, over lime hemp plaster.

Can I use standard sharp sand from a builders merchant to mix with the putty?
I'm sure the putty supplier will answer this when I go there tomorrow, but I'd prefer to be just a little less ignorant when I have that conversation!
(I'm not looking for an utterly smooth finish, and will be limewashing.)

Cheers, Stephen

I'd of thought building sand also.
Sharpe sand is gritty with stones that may drag.

Kiln dried sand is very fine, which is what I needed for the top coat, though I don't understand why it needs to be kiln dried!

That's interesting.

My previous house had original 1905 lime plaster and the finish was a skim coat without sand, polished very smooth.
