Is there any reliable test I can do other than just try a replacement? I have no spares unfortunately.

If you do not have any means of doing an insulation test then you may be able to prove it by doing a cold wash with the heater disconnected. Not 100% sure it will go through the program though but it's worth a try. Ensure you insulate the wires you disconnect from the element so they cannot short to anything.

May have had a eureka / you idiot moment when I discovered the plug was not pushed fully home in the cheapy 4-gang extension lead.

Out toddler just loves spinning the dial on the washing machine which we try to make as boring as possible for him by unplugging it so the lights don't come on.
