Looking around the interweb there is a fairly common issue with the wiring arrangement for hobs such as the INDESIT - VRM640MIX Ceramic Hob.

Problems arise when, for one reason or another, the Indesit supplied pre-wired cable is disconnected and you cannot remember how to re-connect it.

Assuming that you are using the supplied cable and that it is being connected to a GB single phase supply the photo shows how to connect the appliance at the appliance end. The supply end has the live conductors (brown and black) made together, the neutrals (blue) made together and the earths made together for an ordinary 3 terminal connection.

At the appliance and there are 6 terminals numbered from 1 on the left in this picture. L1, L2 and L3 are to be connected to live (also called phase), L4 and L5 are connected to neutral and L6 to earth.

This type of connector box ships with a number of normally spare (when using the Indesit 6 conductor cable) jumpers which are stored in a little compartment bottom left.

Units normally ship with L2 to L3 jumpered together. If not use one of the spares to common these terminals together.

One of the live conductors is inserted into L3 which is in turn connected by jumper to L2.

If you do not have the Indesit 6 conductor cable you can still fit the appliance with 3 conductor cable but I guess you will blow you warranty. In this case you will need to jumper L1, L2 and L3 together and connect your live wire to say L1. L4 and L5 need to be jumpered with your neutral wire connected to say L5. If the jumpers are missing you will have to make your own with some wire.

I hope this helps someone.
