Wiring Diagram - is this correct?

OK, it didn't like that!

As of yesterday, all cables in place but not wired, feed was the only connection all upstairs lights worked fine.

Added this connection (exactly as diagram, no switches or lamps wired in yet), put the power back on, only half the lights upstairs work.

Disconnected what I've just done (as it was working yesterday), still only half the lights working upstairs.

Nothing tripped.

Any ideas?

One thing I was not aware of, and I think i've found this is meant to be correct - I was just buzzing out my connections and noticed that the neutral is earthed at the ceiling rose - taking this back it appears this is direct from the feed.

Yes, although it is not 'earthed' at the rose (or shouldn't be).
Neutral and earth are connected at some point (outside of your installation - must not be within) which varies depending on your earthing method.
That is why you will measure 240V between Line and Earth as well as Line and Neutral.

Note when testing that any double pole switches when open will remove this connection.
