has any one used a mechanical hole borer? Can a 4 inch post be knocked into a 4 inch diameter hole satisfactorily? is concrete with a larger hole essential?

didn't your mother tell you you cant get a square peg in a round hole ! ;)
No seriously that will be fine but I would use some postmix as well.

Yes,it would be OK

I was taught how to put posts in using the traditional method (for hanging farm gates)
Cut turf off,and place to one side.
Dig a hole slightly larger than the size of the post.
Dig the hole deep enough to have half of the above-ground height below ground (i.e. 4' above ground needs 2' deep hole)
Place post in and check for vertical
ALL the soil that came out of the hole gets rammed back in to support the post.
Use turf removed earlier to finish off - job done!

Although it works,I could never really understand how all the soil goes back in the same hole, when you have filled most of it up with a whopping great lump of wood
