Can random lenght wooden flooring (50mm wide 18mm thick) be layed at right angles to existing floor boards and therefore in line with the supportting floor joists, or must it be layed the same way as the floorboards and therefore at right angles to the floorjoists?

I intend to lay a wooden floor on 3mm hardboard glued and pinned to my existing floorboards, but iam unsure which way it should be layed.

Any advice on the above and method would be gratefully received.
