I have some new pressure treated half round fence rails. They are going somewhere a bit remote so I'd rather they lasted well. Is it worth giving them a coat of something, if so what? Ideally animal friendly if they get a bit chewed.

Not if they are treated properly, waste of time, if they are not treated properly then it is still a waste of time. 
You could slap some treatment and sealant on cut ends (if you cut them to length, which you should avoid if possible), cut ends should not go in ground.
