If the engine doesn't fire up in one revolution or so, then there's a very good chance that they are faulty.
You can test them with a multimeter, if you have one......handy to measure both ohms and volts.

Can you find the pipes leading to the fuel injectors? The glow plugs are quite close by, and the 4 of them are connected together by a thick length of cable.
A quick test.....set the multimeter to the next voltage higher than 12 (usually 20v DC). Turn the ignition on, and your meter should read 12v or thereabouts for a few seconds (this time interval has its own electronic timer).
Next test involves taking the electric cable off each plug, and setting the multimeter to the lowest ohms setting.
Test between the top of each glowplug and the metal of the engine. You should get a reading of around one ohm if the plugs are working.
You don't need the ignition on for this second test).
