no power in my volvo s40

My Volvo s40 has been in the garage twice because of loss of power ,it has now happened again .I was told that that the exauste had a build up of carbon and that I need some sort of valve. Could you give some giudance

It's very likely to be the EGR, or exhaust gas recirculation valve that's giving the problem......the scourge of all modern diesels.
Basically the exhaust gas is burnt twice to reduce pollution, and it's the grot in the valve that causes it to stick. Often the engine management light is on at the same time.

Just pondering......if an engine has ad blue injection, does that make the EGR redundant?

I think some engines can still use both, only heard of truck engines running on ad blue with no egr.
I thought it was one or the other but it seems not.
