I haven't the proper wheel alignment kit, but managed to carefully setup a method of measuring the wheel alignment.

I measured the front wheel rim (14" wheel) distances

The rim at axle height toward the rear of the car is 2mm further apart than the rim toward the front of the car.

The tyres show slight feathering wear but the front left usuall cops a fair bit of damage. I've been to the garage(s) with it but they say the tracking's fine.

Any thoughts?

Suspension/ball joint damage is a possibility, particularly if the nearside is being kerbed a lot (as you suggest it is).

I've had it on stands and pulled the wheel about to try and feel for any slack eg . track rods.. would I feel any movement if were what you said?

It's more the suspension ball joints and arms that need to be investigated, although worn track rod ends (inner or outer) would cause the problem. Testing the joints needs a good bit of leverage as you're working against the suspension. Even slight distortion in a steering or suspension arm could cause a problem.
Not familiar with the Micra but would guess that only tracking can be adjusted so any other steering geometry checks would have to be done on specialist equipment.

I applaud what you've done to check out your Micra, but really it needs to be set up with a laser tracker......basically the alignment of the rear wheels is said to be fixed and that becomes a datum, the steering wheel is locked in the straight ahead position, and the two track rod ends are adjusted individually.
It could be worth the £25 or so in the long run.
John :)
