I'm new to the forum so happy new year to all

I posted elsewhere but I think it may have been in the wrong place so here goes again

Bough a Vivaro crew cab , 2003, 1.9 Diesel a few months ago and never had a problem until tonight. I started it up as usual and drove about a mile when suddenly it died completely in seconds. It refuses to start even though it turns over perfectly but will not fire. It did a very long journey yesterday in extremely heavy rain but seemed fine. the reason I mentioned the rain was that i had a similar Renault traffic that died every time it hit a puddle of water on the road but I never had that problem with the Vivaro--not yet anyway.
The only thing I did notice recently with the Vivaro was that it took a long time to warm up after starting and would have to be coaxed along with the accelerator until eventually it took off and ran normally but I thought that was par for the course with these vans as the Renault had a similar problem back then.
I had just put diesel in the vivaro tonight just before starting out on the journey but I doubt if that has anything to do with it ? I get my fuel locally and have done so for years in the same place.

I don't remember seeing any engine management light on as this happened so quickly. I tried starting it several times since but even though it turns over as usual it will not start

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

very difficult to diagnose these problems on the internet but they are plagued with fuel system problems and wiring issues. see if you can find a good local diesel specialist, they will be able to test system pressures etc and save you scratching your head and playing a guessing game.

Hello all, Just signed up, had to after all the help that previous subscribers have given me through reading their posts,
I have a renault trfaic 2005 DCi1100 SWB 1.9L, which packed in on the way home last week, never gave me a bother before.
I noticed before it stalled that there was a clicking noise, like a relay clicking!
Anyhow, after much poking around and reading all I could from this and other sites, talking to several mechanics and engaging one who promptly started ordering every bit of the electronics from sensors right up to new injectors, sound familiar?,
I decided to give it one more shot myself, got her running and it stalled agian after a short while, started her again and started to pull at the wires to sensors one by one, eventually came to an aluminium box like item inside the engine bay on the wall of the fusebox, has a heat sink on top, called a bed7/12 pre-heater relay unit, gave it as shake...engine stopped. Did it several times...engine stops.
To cut a longer story short, the wires from this run into a larger loom heading to/from the enginge/ fusebox and it is this loom which is shorting where it goes thru the the body into the fuseboard. saw sparks while pulling at it.
So be carfeful before mechanics start changing parts, from the repeating horror stories I have read here, it can cost alot for a frayed wire!!!
I slid a piece of plastic under the wire loom so that it cannot touch the body..job done. Cost..my time and a piece of a coke bottle.

Well done there Cormault. You were lucky enough with that one in so far as it was not an expensive job.

Mine stopped dead and when i eventually got it to a garage they diagnosed the fuel pump. Got a pump secondhand and they put it in.
Rang me again to say that the mass airflow meter was also gone. How the 2 seemed to go at the same time is beyond me but anyway got a new one and they put that in . All good so far and the van is running like a clock

With hind sight I did notice that it was very very sluggish when cold and when taking off, but when it warmed up it seemed to run just fine. That had been happening for months so perhaps it was linked to one of the items I mentioned

Good luck with it Rusty,
Hope it satys well, and if you have any more bother, do a little research on other forums, you will find unfortunates spending big money tracking these problems with garages replacing different parts one after the other.
Mines got 236000 km on the clock so watch the wiring at that point!
Until next breakdown!
Slan agus beanacht!
