Volkswagen LT Won't Start

The new starter arrived this morning and after another hour or so of work, I tried to start the van and........ it started first time :D

However, twice today after restarting after a short stop, the engine has took a bit of starting, first time was nothing too unusual, but the second time, it took quite a few seconds which has never happened before.

As you would expect, the starter is spinning the engine nicely, it just doesn't seem to fire.

Apparently, after disconnecting the battery, the vehicle's ECU looses power and has to relearn the operating characteristics of the engine. I hoping this is the cause of the hesitant starting and that it will improve.

I know this vans starting to sound like a bit of a lemon (still got that crank pulley to replace), but I've had it for nearly four years and 70K and this is the first time it's given me any trouble. I had another LT previously for six years and it only needed normal service items: brakes, battery etc.
