Just wanted to follow up on this by posting that I bought a pumice liner system from a company called Stoves Direct as recommended by other posters here. The advice and service I received from their chimney guy was exemplary.
This does need to be built in as the chimney is constructed and at a cost of £600 was not quite as bad as I had expected.
Hope this proves helpful to someone else.
