When is building control required?

Hi all. Just bought a new house (1947 built) and were planning a few jobs but I was wondering what work requires building control notice? We want to knock a window out and fit patio doors, possibly knock out a chimney Brest etc. I will be doing the work myself with advice and help from a builder friend. Thanks. Chris.
