wood burning stoves

hi folks

trying to get my head around installing a wood burning stove. however it is doing my head in.

i have just read the building regs and it states that the hearth if placed on combustible material (ours will be sitting on a wooden chip board floor) them it must be 250mm thick.

i have just brought a 30mm thick slate hearth. The wood burner we have purchased is a asgard 3 which has a log store at the bottom under the fire chamber. Which means the fire chamber will be more the 250mm from the floor but the fire it self sitting on the hearth which only 30mm thick.

in addition i can not get my head around how high the flue needs to be is it a meter above where it comes out of the roof or at least the same height as the ridge which would mean the flue would be 2 meters above the where it comes out of the roof.

help would be great as i am getting more and more confused

Firstly it's not just your roof that influences chimney/flue height but also its suroundings as well as usual wind-strength/direction


There are many rules of thumb/guidelines: one I happen to remember said " 40 cm taller than anything within 8 m of flue."

You need to look at your individual situation and see how sensible this kind of advice is.

P.S. I think storing wood under stove is foolish: ashes/embers inevitably fall out with regularity and thus big fire-risk
