Cutting hole in external house solid wall for flue pipe

Hi,

I see this done in so many places I really didn't give it much concern, but now I'm having second thoughts.

In my 1930's solid block wall house, I'm installing a Rayburn solid fuel range. I need to put a flue through the wall (no chimney in kitchen). This would entail cutting/drilling a 8.5" hole at 45 degrees down through the wall.

If it were a straight through hole, I'd be a little less concerned, but at 45 degrees, that's going to remove a lot of material!

It seems to be very common place to do this, but is it safe? It is a load bearing external wall.

Any opinions?

Why not fit in a short lintel, say 600 long, to provide wall support, then remove blocks from below, fit flue and then brick back up.

Thanks. It's a good suggestion and would be safest I guess. The only problem is that it's a pebble dash house and it'll look gash as they won't be able to match the render. If I could diamond drill a perfect hole, it'd be neater I think.
