What are your guys opinions on laying a floating floor of 18mm or 22mm chipboard directly onto celotex? Sounds a bit iffy if you ask me, but I've heard of people doing it.

Would a minimum of 60mm concrete followed by a minimum of 40mm screed not be a better base over celotex?

22mm floating floors are fine, 40mm screed is a very bad idea.
My issue with chipboard on celotex is that celotex rarely goes down flat, especially in corners where the DPM pushes it up. That's where the mass of concrete would hold it down.

How about decreasing concrete down to say 40mm at the highest point of a garage floor (which would end up being about 70mm at the other end on most garages) and laying 60mm screed?

What you doing messing about with concrete and screed for? Just stick a 75mm screed down on top. Or otherwise just stick timber joists down and insulate between these and screw your boards down. Gravity will hold it all down. My local BC departments always seem happy with this proposal.

The thinking is that where the screed is substantially more than 75mm (say 120mm), laying concrete will create for a stronger floor than a thick bed of screed laid in two hits. Although in all fairness, it is only for residential use.

Back to the opening question, both your proposals bring the floor up to a different height. How much do you have to bring the floor by? ...and what is there at the moment?
