In wish to remove one of these and break it up. Are these made from solid concrete or is it hollow with concrete only in the shape of the surround behind the tiles? If so would it be possible to smash it up in situ? rather than take off the wall? thanks in advance

They are usually concrete backed and damned heavy. Don't break it up, reclamation yards will buy it or perhaps a local yard may take it out and collect it. Alternatively stick it on fleabay or leave it out for the p***ys.

It will be solid concrete with reinforcement bars inside, it will make a mess trying to break it up insitu.
Cut the plaster away down both sides, there should be a couple of brackets to unscrew.
2 people can lift it.

co-incidently I have someone interested in it and is willing to come and take it out, therefore a saved a lot of hard work
