Hi all,

I am after a lock that automatically locks when swung shut but requires a key from both sides to open,

Can't find anything anywhere surely they do one

Cheers for all the help

locked in your house when its on fire not a nice thought

if its for a gate then a chain and padlock that can be pulled through from either side to unlock is the only thing i can think off

That's why I spose you can't really find them allow my back patio doors look with a key from both sides so when the fire is blasing at the front door I spose I'm buggered :)

Yes it is for a back gate not a house, a chain is all well and good but will all my family members lock it every time they want to go through..... No
So there would be no point in having a lock, that's why I need a lock that locks automatically when shut,

Quick search comes up with this :
http://www.simplydoorhandles.co.uk/...cylinder-mortice-night-latch-mcn5025sskit.asp

Ignore the bit about a thumb turn, just buy another Euro-cylinder. I imagine that if you asked, they'd supply with a double cylinder instead of the thumb turn. Of course, if someone has enough access they can easily push the bolt back - and if there is enough of a gap then it can be done from the front with a flexible card.

In case you aren't familiar with them, the Euro Cylinder is a standard size/shape for lock inserts. If you look at the picture (the device is upside down BTW), the keyhole shaped bit passing through the mortice latch is the Euro Cylinder - as long as you have the key then it just slots in and is retained by one screw. Makes changing locks (eg on change of tenant in a rented property) a doddle.

You will also need escutcheon plates on both sides to support the cylinder, and will need to choose a cylinder of the right length so it doesn't stick out. While it probably doesn't apply to a garden gate (presumably they can climb over if they want), it's worth having a read of this : http://www.euro-secure.com/locksnapping.asp

http://www.securedbydesign.com/aware/checklist.aspx says : If you are replacing your lock cylinder make sure it is to standard TS007 or Sold Secure SS312 Diamond Standard.
