Hi hope I've put this in the right section.

I am a complete novice at DIY so forgive me if this is a dumb question.

How do I know what kind of wall I am drilling into, and what kind of screws should i use?

I am putting up shelving onto an external facing wall, however from inside the house if you knock on the wall it sounds hollow at most points, although some points are not hollow sounding. It is solid brick outside but I am assuming some kind of plaster board attached on the inside? Any help would be great so that I don't use the wrong screws, drill bit, etc.

It could be a timber framed house, or block with dot and dab inside. If it's timber framed screw into the studs.
