using lime mortar/safety issues

i need to use some lime to repoint parts of a clunch wall and i have been reading up a bit on how to safely handle lime.

seems strange to be that you should need to wear a face mask and gloves to handle something that hundreds of years ago used without all the correct protective gear..

saying that-i seriously do not like the idea of acid burns or going blind when i get a splatter in the face : /

anyone have any thoughts?

cheers

Just be sensible with it. lime will burn your eyes, but it's most likely to splash from the mixer. When pointing it is less likely. When bricklaying it can happen when you spring the line.

And a lot less than 'hundreds of years ago' ... there are many alive today that used lime on a daily basis without PPE.
