I've got a heat gun but to be honest it's really slow going.

So, I just went straight to the electric sander. It's working, but I think the paper is knackering too quickly as it's 120 grit or so.

Would I be better off with a low grit to get the paint off, then switching to the high grit for a smoother finish?

Depends on how much you have to do !

You could try Perma Grit Sanding Sheets, (or hand Sander) last a lifetime. but expensive for DIY.

They are based on the Old "Cintride" Sanding Sheets for Hand sanders and Electric Sanders,
Decorators Merchants and DIY outlets refused to sell their product when they realised the sale of Glass Papers would be non exsistent.
(Click on Dealers There are a few in UK.)
