I would say no, but if one is supplied with the appliance and the manufacturers instructions request this to be used, follow that instruction.

For your own peace of mind, especially if there are young children around or your wife/partner has a habit of putting heavy casserole dishes on a drop-down oven door, then fit one. Better safe than sorry.

Probably not, but I have encountered some letting agents who are convinced they are a requirement.

Not worth arguing over - £2 item and 5 minutes to fit.
