I've noticed this week that an oily substance is leaking from my main fuse onto the big cable that feeds it. I asked my electrician about it and he said that he's seen this a few times since the heatwave began and to check that it's not hot (it isn't). The girl at the DNO says that they don't treat this as an emergency if there's no heating of the fuse involved but that they will make an appointment to come to change it. What is this oil anyway?

Older cables are insulated using oil impregnated paper, it's common in warm weather for the oil to become a bit less viscose and leak out, especially if the cutout is at a lower level than the rest of the cable

That's interesting. If it continues, is there any risk that the insulation could be compromised?
