Hi,

We have just had an extension built and plan to move the cooker some 5 or 6 metres from where it is positioned.

Our cooker is wired into the consumer unit via a connecter unit and a protection unit.

Is it ok to run a 5 to 6 meter extension from the existing connecter unit or do we need to run new wiring from the protection unit, positioning the connecter unit closer to the cooker ?

Cheers.

Sorry, I meant to say a two pole switch (after the RCD).... a cooker switch, wired down to a connector box.

The basic question is, how far can a connecter box be from a cooker ?

There is no real limit the regulations refer to "Local" but they do not define local most would require the isolator to be visible from the cooker location and to be between cooker location and exit so if the house needed to be evacuated the whole cooker could be turned off on the way out.

However no hard and fast rules on this it is really down to common sense.

The Electrician's Guide to Building Regulations advises cookers/ovens between 300mm horizonally and 2m from the isolator. It certainly shouldn't be directly over it as you don't want to lean over your burning chip pan to turn off the juice if it all goes wrong.

Using a longer cable from the existing connection point is fine as long as the connection point remains accessible.
