I have grown them from seed and they are now about 1.5 feet tall and ready to be planted outside . . . . . but the cold weather is here, 11 degrees celsius in Manchester this weekend. Should I hang on or just go for it and plant out?

personally i would plant them out while at the same time sowing a few more in pots on the windowsill (or in a coldframe, greenhouse etc). then you'll still have a crop whatever happens. in theory ;)

Get them out in the ground, its where they belong, have you dug a trench with some well rotted manure in the bottom, its what they like.
