WTF?

1000ft higher than the exclusion zone and still shot down, or was there pilot error with altitude?

Shortly before boarding Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, a Dutchman, Cor Pan heading for Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam with his girlfriend paused to take a picture of the Boeing 777-200, posting it on Facebook with a scary description, "If the plane disappears, this is what it looks like."

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration 9M-MRD performing flight MH-17/KL-4103 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 283 passengers and 15 crew, was enroute at FL330 about 20nm northeast of Donetsk (Ukraine) when the transponder data became unreliable at 13:18Z ( position N48.28 E38.08 ) and was lost at FL330 at 13:20Z. The aircraft came down near the villages of Shakhtarsk and Hrabove (Ukraine) about 20nm from the last transponder position and 20nm from the Ukrainian/Russian border, the ELT of the aircraft was recorded at position N48.1230 E38.5258.
The photo posted is a picture of 9M-MRC

Almost certainly another sick mind trading on the tragedy

Putin knows it was "his" boys wot shot it down; he hasn't accused Ukraine of firing the missile, but rather has said "This wouldn't have happened if you hadn't started [a war]"
Also, a separatist posted a tweet about "having a good day, just took down a Ukrainian jet" at almost the exact time and location of MH17. Tweet has since been deleted.
Putin will front it out again - he knows he is untouchable.

I don't know about vertical exclusion zones, but I read today that most airliners are now completely avoiding Ukraine airspace. Sensible.

Especially those where the protagonists have Soviet missiles!
Or American ones ;)

Their calls for 'justice' are a bit laughable after they rewarded the captain and crew of the Vincennes who shot down the Iranian airbus...

And they never admitted liability or apologised!

There were no calls for a UN/International investigation either...

Funny that

they shot down a couple of small aircraft, and a military one before this,so why is a civilian plane flying over a warzone, altitude or not,its high risk it would get blown out the sky.
so why did they fly over warzone ? to save fuel by not diverting? so it took 295 lives for them to decide its now dangerous and now taking a different route. for goodness sake.

Does anyone know how they know it was shot down? Immediately after the crash they were saying it was shot down. Did someone see the missile?

It could just as feasibly have been a bomb on board, or even a catastrophic failure in flight.

It all seems a little too convenient.....

Either way it is a terrible tragedy for all those involved. :(

United States of America Officials reported that the aircraft has been shot down. US radar systems tracked a ground to air missile turning onto and tracking an airliner, a second system detected a heat signature just as the aircraft was being hit. The data are currently being evaluated to determine the launching point of the missile. On Jul 18th 2014 the USA announced, that the missile has been launched inside the borders of the Ukraine.

How come they didn't 'track' the one that got Malaysia flight 370 ;)

Pro-Russian combatants have been monitored bragging about shooting it down.

Their boss even Tweeted the fact before deleting it again.

The Americans and Russians will both have highly capable military satellites monitoring the war zone, so both leaders will have no doubt on who/what shot it down. There will be several days of political posturing before any formal investigation goes public and apportions blame.

As for MH370, it was just another flight, but with its transponders switched off. Military satellites are generally passive monitors who have no interest in commercial airliners. Its the missile system's tracking radar and missile homing beacon frequencies that the satellites are tuned into, not the aircraft.

I repeat...

"How come they didn't 'track' the one that got Malaysia flight 370"...

In case you are confused, that is the aircraft that has been 'missing' for several months!
