Hi,

Might be being really thick but here goes.

Just noticed this evening that we could hear the boiler had kicked in and was heating the hot water. We don't have the pre-heat setting turned on and we hadn't used any of the taps for hours. Any idea what would be causing the boiler to heat water at random? We haven't got any timers set for hot water to come on and central heating isn't on at all.

Assuming you have system boiler and a hot water cylinder of some sorts, then the cylinder will loss heat over time and the falling temperatue will trigger the heating cycle to keep the hot water at a minimum temperature so you get hot water when you switch on the tap.

Assuming its not a system boiler because op said its not a system boiler.

What were the lights on the front of the boiler showing? spesifically the tap light? Could be a sticking diverter valve/switch making the boiler think you are running the tap. How long did it stay in this state for?
