Hi,

I am replacing my old weak 35Kw glow worm combi with the following Viessmann setup:- System boiler - 200-w 35Kw, Cylinder - 200-v (250ltr) and weather compensation unit HO1B. I chose this system after looking and reading as much info on the net as possible! I have a 5 bed detached house built around 1920, it has been fully insulated in the walls & loft etc and I have also put in A+ rated windows throughout. My questions are more for curiosity now as I have bought all my required components for the installation but I still have a few curiosity's on parts of the system I cant make my mind up on from the information available based on this setup.

My plumber friend who is very busy with paying jobs is going to help cover the safety aspects to ensure the installation is up to spec. I am hoping to do as much of the installation as possible my self and I was wondering exactly what I can and cant do legally? There seems to be so many differing answers to this question I was hoping to clear it up once and for all. I know I am 100% competent at doing the install I am qualified in multiple areas of engineering but I don't specialise in plumbing nor do I ever intend to although I have always done all my own work in my own home. Hopefully explaining this now will save any possible grillings from registered & qualified people. The reason I am not asking my mate these questions is 1 - he is very busy and I don't want to put him out too much, 2 - I enjoy researching and making my own decisions, 3 - friend or no friend I hate taking the path advised from only one source, I research and make my own decisions then there is only me to blame if things are not as good as they could be!

Yes I have the pressure and flow rate to theoretically get good results from an unvented system, anything will beat the 34'c temp rise at 11-12 ltrs a min especially as winter is approaching!

Sorry for the big explanation above just hoping to cover a few things that may get in the way of getting the straight answers rather than the topic heading off on a tangent.

Questions:-
Legally what cant I do on the installation?
The cylinder is a 250ltr capacity, it has a "Secondary return port" I know what this is and I dont need to use it, I assume you can just cap it off?
Do I have to fit a TMV to the cylinder? apart from the obvious safety aspect are they more hassle / flow reducing than worth?
The sensor pocket on the cylinder is about 20mm internal dia, the NTC probe is about 6mm dia do you just lob it in the hole, do you advise using some type of putty to fill the end to keep it there?
As the tundish has to be close to the cylinder and the cylinder is in the loft virtually above the boiler which is in the bathroom, should I fit a secondary tundish near the boiler where it is much simpler to view or is that just not done?
I know the HO1B system makes the requirement for an internal stat redundant, I do have real fires in the lounge and dining room that we do like to use in winter, and the rads are fitted with TRV's if I use the Viessmann Vitotronic 200 RF unit will I gain anything or will it just make the HO1B unit pointless?
Am I missing something or overlooking any part of the system that may need changing to make further improvements to savings or flow rates?
The last one! Overall do you agree this will be a good system? It makes no difference to me now I have made my bed, but an answer may help others.

Sorry for all the questions, and any replies will be appreciated.

Kind regards
Mark

I have explained many times on this forum.

Suggest you use the search facility!

Perhaps "boiler install by DIYer"

But far easier ask your plumber friend!

Okay no problem, this is what I was trying to avoid, I hoped I expressed my self clearly but obviously not. I am not getting into a slanging match on what I have or have not searched for on this or any other forum / website / installation manual, I believed from the knowledge I have shown on the installation research has been carried out. I also think I clearly stated why I didn't want to "ask my plumber friend" just like I am with friends (I hope) he says he will do it all no worries but I know he is very busy and I would prefer to get the donkey work done myself to keep his time at a minimum without doing things that may need undoing beacuse of HSE regulations.

If some of my questions have been answered on this forum and I have missed said answer then I apologise, perhaps I have seen multiple posts that contradict themselves and simply wish to ask my own questions to my own specific circumstances? I do believe not all of the questions I asked have been answered anywhere. What I do see on many forums are people flaming others, understandable if they can't be bothered covering the basics then ask stupid questions. I choose not to reply to daft questions, I don't see any point other than bumping up post counts as to why other members bother wasting their time on what they perceive as a time waster? If I am asking dumb questions I would prefer it if my posts are simply ignored rather than replied to.

What you'll need is an unvented ticket, this will give you all the info required for a safe unvented cylinder installation and allow you to sign it off without bothering your mate.
Also a relevant gas qualification for the boiler and flue might be handy.
The rest should be a piece of cake for an engineer!!
