Thanks what would you connected to the over side off these i.e the 1/2 male thread. Would you usually use a 1/2 female to 15mm compression fitting?

On most meters you can dispense with a connection. The male thread on the body of a 1/2" water meter is 3/4" BSP, 3/4" meters are 1" BSP and so on.

To fit a 1/2" meter to 15mm copper, dispense with the tails and fit a 15mm X 3/4" BSP female compression coupler.
Although, using this method makes replacing the meter a tad difficult.

Keeping the tails, use a 15mm X 1/2" female comp coupler.

Service valve should be fitted after the meter to prevent the whole houses' pipe work draining through the open end. A drain off cock should be fitted after this service valve also.
