What are the standard dimensions of the studs used for the construction of the external wall timber frames, is there a standard for their construction.

Tony,

I've just received a drawing of the frames that should have been used and it specifies 50 x 125, however after just measuring them they are only 100mm deep. We are also having problems with mould could this be a possible cause if there isn't enough insulation. How could I check the quality of the insulation.

Regards,

bill

Standard stud sizes fro timber frames are 38x89 or 38x140

Insulation depth would depend on what type and its thermal value so less insulation of a higher insulation value could be used.

Condensation mould depends on the dew point of air on cold surfaces. Generally timber framed walls are not cold enough or are warmer than other surfaces, so less susceptible to condensation mould

The most important thing for a timber frame wall is the vapour check barrier. If this is punctured or incomplete, then dampness gets into the frame and can cause mould and rot - but this is different to condensation mould

The council have some sort of thermal measuring device  so they say, I use Kingspan wall batts these are imho the best option for insulating a framed wall. The outside of the frame needs a breathable membrane over it that it breaths allowing some air flow but not moisture.
