hi guys, one of my dg windows has white streaks on the inside, is there a way of removing it to clean, and then put it back again. it is the pane that is accessible from inside the house.
thanks

The 2 panes of glass are normallt vacum sealed and stuck with a divider to keep them apart. Some modern unit have a gas in them instead of the vacum sealing.
Take the unit out and run it down to your local glass shop, they might be able to separate it clean it and re seal it for you .

BEFORE.....

You take the glass out, ring them up & first ask if they will do that (as I have seen someone say that places wont, its easier to just replace as new) and secondly enquire on the cost.

It may cost that much that you'd refer the streaks :D

IF i can add for the record sealed units do not have a vacuum inside or the glass would implode . the spacer bars on the unit (the bits that hold the glass apart) contain a dessicant crystal (simular to that in a biscuit barrel) then the unit is sealed around the perimeter (edge) its the dessicant that dehydrates the air inside trapping the moisture in the crystal. this is known as hermetically sealed, its when the perimeter seal fails this allows more moister in to the cavity between the glass. The crystals will keep absorbing moister like a sponge, but when full the moisture then settles on the inside of the unit. this is known as a failed unit,

most glass shops inc ours, will not reseal old units due to the risks involved in splitting them and the contamination (old sealant) that can get onto the brushes of the glass washing machine. and takes hours to run off the machine, disrupting production. best option new unit.

Thats more like it, proper answer. They do have some with gas in though.

You still need to remove it to get the correct size and gap, also to make way for the new unit.

thanks for your advice guys, i just thought that you could take the pane out somehow, because the smears look as though someone has cleaned it (inside) but not dried it properly. it is definately not moisture, it is definately white streaks that you would get if you cleaned something with a wet cloth but didn't dry it.
once again thanks for all the advice :D

The white smears are the minerals from any moisture that has entered the cavity, eventually if left the glass will start to go white, as what happens is moisture enters the unit ,some times you do not even notice the sun comes out produces heat in the cavity and dries out some of the moisture leaving a mineral coating on the glass. if our deminraliser in our glass washer requires changing it starts to leave white residue on the glass picked up by the light bed.this alerts the oprative, demin needs changing we do have a machine that also tells you but goes off well before they actually need changing. or if the white streaks have been there since it was installed it could be a unit that has slipped through on production. leaving this residue.

but unfortunately the only answer is a new one, some franchisees are being sold at the moment to try to dry out inside units but the cost is aimed at bigger commercial units.not economically viable for the retail sector at the moment.
