Have you tried an ordinary eraser - the kind that removes pencil marks on paper? Limestone is an absorbent stone so it's usually recommended that it be sealed when it's installed. You'd certainly do that with a floor and I would have thought it was just as important for a fireplace.

try using washing up liquid with a copper brush dont use a wire brush as it is to hard or try a smooth wet and dry paper but not to hard as you might end up doing the whole fireplace
stone needs to breath so i would not seal it
been a stonemason for 40 years

Thanks for your advice guys .
I tried a little bit of soap and water again i also used an eraser on it .The sharp pencil line has gone but i still have a smudge like mark that is still noticable when you step back and look for it.
The stone looks like it has been polished so i am a little worried constant rubbing might take the shine off the area im trying to clean.

Cheers
