I want to fit a cast iron combination fireplace which will use solid fuel. When I fit it up against the chimney breast I will need to make sure it's sealed so that no gas/hot air escapes. Is ordinary bonding plaster ok for this? Do I seal just round the edges of the fireplace or do I need to create a seal more towards the fireplace and fire opening?

Also, at the top of the tile section there's a small gap where this section meets the section which contains the hood. Will the iron expand to fill this gap or do I need to seal it? if so what with?

Thanks

Sorry alastairreid, I think there's been a misunderstanding. Surely fireclay requires a kiln? As far as I know fireplace fitters don't carry this stuff around with them.
