We had 2 chimney breast,1 going from the dinning room up through a bedroom and into the loft. The other from the sitting-room up through another bedroom and meeting the other stack in an up-side down "Y" shape. If you look at it,we had the left hand side of the chimney breast removed all the way up where it meets in the loft, keeping the other side as we want to open up the fire place. This is held up by a gallows bracket, which I personally don't think is safe but the local council passed. We found out the other day that next door have had all their chimney breast removed even in the loft.Do we need to get a steal beam put in or have the rest of the breast completely removed?
Where do we stand if we find out that it does comply to saftey standards even though it has passed the councils building regs?
Any info would be greatful

thanks

Hi. Bar far the best way to put your mind at rest would be to contract with a structural engineer, they have the knowledge and accreditation to advise. Good Luck
