about 4am there was a crash from downstairs, we went down to see what had happened and the inside pane from the double glazing had shattered, no damage to the outside pane!!! Any ideas on what might have caused this????

A sharp drop in outside temperature & the outer pane shrinks more quickly than the inner; all you need is a stress point & “Bang”. This can be caused by a screw, poorly fitted glass packing, twisted frame or even poor manufacture/assemble of the glazing unit itself, maybe a small nick in the glass where the panes are sealed or a piece of debris in the mastic sealing but just try proving it's a manufacturing fault; & it's very unlikely your warranty will cover it!
This does seem to be happening more with low E coated glass (“K” glass) than older DG units which, by design, means there could be a significant difference in temperature between the out & inner glass panes!
