I installed 3 such windows around 3 years ago as part of a major refurbishment; 2 were installed at 1st floor on a gable end. Holes were cut using a great, MF, 12” petrol driven diamond disc cutter; very noisy, very dusty & can be very dangerous in inexperienced hands. But they are extremely efficient & it takes just minutes; both openings were cut & new lintels installed in under 2 hours & they were inspected by LABC before lunch. Openings were 1200mm wide & didn’t need propping as loads were insignificant & no bricks were dislodged from the top courses. New windows went in after a few days giving the mortar a chance to harden.
As has already been stated, you may need planning permission & the work is is notifyable to LABC; you will need to comply with several specific Building Regulations & LABC will want to inspect the new opening, cavity closers & the lintel installation BEFORE the new window is fitted (fee involved). You will also need a compliance certificate at the end of it or the work will be classed as non compliant building works, causing problems when you come to sell.
