what sort of lock has it got so far?

is there any glass in the door?

is there a letterbox, and how far is it from the planned lock position? (you can reach through these to manipulate nightlatch knobs with a simple home-made tool)

is the lock to be used when the flat is empty, or occupied?

the fire door might blunt your drill a bit, but no big prob.

Fire doors are actually quite soft - mainly chipboard-like filling.

The thing with night latches and flats especially, is that the door easily slams so if she is on the outside when this happens, with no key, then it can be an expensive thing to get back in.

Also watch out for auto-deadlocking latches - can be a good or bad thing

Incidentally, the common solid veneered fire doors found in flats are one of the most insecure doors around. If security is the issue, look for other solutions - and also don't forget the frame - this commonly splits on the keep when the door is kicked
