Could anybody tell me if it is OK to use normal cement (Castle Cement) in the mortar mix for rebuilding top 5 rows of the chimney and should it be 3:1 mix?

I have read on another website that it has to be Portland cement that contained sulphate so that it didn't react with the gases from the gas fire.

Also, is it common practice to line the inside of the chimney with mortar?

Thanks

If the flue is not lined, then you should not use ordinary portland cement, but use a sulphate-resistant cement

But for the top few courses, it probably does not matter

The inside of the flue is parged with mortar to form a smooth surface to prevent soot build up. It not so important nowadays with a gas fire, so you only really need to flush up the joints
