Hedge next to fence

I want to puit a hedge around the garden (probably coniferous) and some of this will be positioned in front of a useless old "waney lap" type fence.

When the trees grow out will the presence of this fence curb the growth in that direction or will they simply grow through it?

I don't plan to include a gap, so would not be able to trim that side of the hedge.

Is this an issue or not?

Not 100% sure of the horticultural side but I wouldn’t have thought the fence would deter a conifer unduly; could be an issue with the fence if it's not yours & your hedge damages it.

Who's is the fence?

The fence marks your boundary, if you put a hedge in within the fence, you will be reducing your boundary if the fence then gets removed at a latter date, unless marker posts etc are left in. posts with wire along top to mark boundary).

Also if the fence is not yours, your putting a hedge that will eventually grow & push against the fence - possibly damaging it - you will be liable.

It might be a better idea to consult your neighbours & ask if they would also like a hedge, that way you can put it on the boundary & each trim the sides.
