Is there a formula for working out the size of steel RSJ needed for supporting a wall?, I want to take a wall out between our dining/living rooms, it's a 9' long, 5 and a half inches thick brick wall, above is two bedrooms and another similar wall, which is off set by 3' (ie, not above the downstairs one), just trying to get an idea of costs for now, I know building regs will be able to tell me but would like to work it out for myself to accurately price it before decidin whether it's worth doing

There is.

But it's known only to the Special Ones.

Allow for a 203x102UB23, you won't be far out with that for pricing.
