This is probably a daft question, but here goes...
When laying the first row of laminate floor, which edge should go up to the spacers against the wall, the tongue or the groove? |

the tongue goes against the wall. i always cut the tongue off on the first row. |

...actually every pack of laminate flooring comes with a sheet of paper which quite clearly explains exactly what mr_vampy has told you. It is also a known fact that very few men actually read the instructions (I am particularly bad myself ).
So yes I was taking the "P" but in a helpful way  |
