my phone won't work if my broadband modem is plugged in. the computer wouldn't connect one day so after much fannying about i managed to get it to work by unplugging the phone. i didn't check the phone was working at the time though. then i noticed the phone wasn't working a few days later, the computer has worked fine since then.

i needed a new phone anyway so bought one today but the problem persisted. thinking one or both ADSL filters may be gubbed i bought one today also and tried that, nothing doing. if the modem is plugged in the house phone is constantly engaged. disconnect the modem and the phone works perfect.

any ideas or am i looking for BT to investigate the modem/broadband?

ta in advance. :)

Sounds like a faulty modem if the line is engaged when its plugged in and the dial tone comes back once the modem is disconnected,if you have no dial tone when the hub is disconnected your line could be dissconnected one leg.If you call openreach out and they unplug your modem and the fault goes you will be charged.

hmm, so a new modem looks likely. wonder what good old BT will charge for that?

edit: am i being naive in being a little disgruntled about the possibility of BT charging for a fault on their equipment? sure, i'll pay for a replacement but i wouldn't expect to be charged for the call-out on a faulty modem that they supplied. might as well bin BT and join sky.

normally you dont rent your modem from BT there is a one off charge so if it goes faulty its not BT equipment and they can charge you for it.

ring and ask them if you rent it. they will be able to tell you. if you do they will send out a new one with no charge.

if you dont might be cheaper to buy one yourself
