Aluminium windows in wood frame

Hi Folks,

I've currently got old aluminium windows set into a wooden frame. Is there any reason that I can't just chop out the whole of the wood back down to the brick when I replace them?
And does this go for both the downstairs ones - which are brick structure, and the upstairs one - which is a dormer bungalow (wood?) structure.

I'm assuming the wood is there because it was easier for them to get an aluminum frame at a set size and then wood to fill ?

No reason why, I always remove the hardwood surround when fitting new pvc windows, when you take out the aluminium frame you'll likely see the screws fixing the hardwood to whatever is behind it, possibly dwangs wedged in the cavity if there is one. Either use fixing clips or use the same wedged dwangs to fix through the new frame.
