Over the last week one of our ceiling lights has stopped working. (Decorative 3 bulb fitting)

I've checked the bulbs they are okay,
I've checked the decorative fitting, that's ok.
I've replaced the light switch that's ok.
I've temporarily put up a standard pendant fitting but that doesn't work.

I believe the fitting is the last on a 'loop in circuit' as there are only two cable coming in to the rose. (One from the previous rose, presumably in the hall and the other to the switch).

The cables are terminated as follows : Live connected to live (chocolate bar connector, red to red), both blacks connected to seperate chocolate bar connectors and the earths terminated together.

The light fitting is connected : brown to switched live and blue to the black cable from the previous rose (mains supply).

But still no light, all I can think of is that there is a fault in the cable from the previous rose somewhere on the neutral as I get power through the live feed (red). I also get power through the switched live when the switch is in the 'on' position.

I also get power going out of the fitting back to the neutral in the mains feed when the switch is in the 'on' position, is that right?

Is it time to call in the proffessionals???

i would say so, but try looking in the previous fitting first, see if the neutral has been disconnected, try also changing the supply cable to the fitting, from previous fitting

if still no luck, its time to call someone out, should not cost much unless your in or close to london, north is relitivly cheeper, so is the west, it also depends weather you want it done NOW (emergancy call) or are happy to wait for it to be booked in for a few weeks in advance

Many thanks,

I've already checked the previous ceiling roses in the circuit for a disconnected neutral.

I guess it's time to call in the smart guys. But it can wait until people get back to work properly, should be okay price wise living in the Forest of Dean, the trades round here are normally pretty good in comparison to my old days in London.

It might be worth checking the tightness of connections in previous lights in the circuit. Fault finding on these circuits is generally quite straightforward and a big clue will be whether the light failed following other work (even just changing a bulb) or just spontaneously

Thanks for the tip, it went about 4 weeks ago after a bulb actually exploded in the fitting, I replaced the bulb and had to replace the wall switch as that had a bit of a bad (ozone type) smell to it. All worked for about 4 weeks okay and then just stopped working again.

My gut feeling is it must be the cable somewhere back to the previous rose in the circuit, (although the house was re-wired about 8 years ago)I can't undertand why as no other work has been undertaken in that part of the house for about 4 years.

I'll get a professional in next week as I don't have the tools or the specialist knowledge my self.

Cheers
