I just replaced a valve from the hot water tank to the taps.

The old valve is a gate valve, fitted about 20 years ago. the inside is coated with green crud.. presumably from the copper corrosion.

Is there any way of avoiding the same fate for the ball lever valve I put in? or any other part of the plumbing for that matter.

yup..
The crud is on the old gate valve. the green deposits are also on the shaft with the handle on.. not sure if was a slow leak on the old one.

It was probably a slight weep. Nothing to worry about as you have changed it anyway.

If you saw the amount of cr*p that's most likely sitting in the bottom of your hot water cyclinder you wouldn't worry about a bit in the pipework.
