Did you discover that using Google Maps Street View?! Very useful resource.
 
No, of course they don't work. A similar con came about when unleaded petrol was being introduced. A company was selling some 'magic' balls in a small cage that you dropped into your fuel tank. They were supposed to stop pinking and valve seat erosion if you put unleaded into a car that needed leaded. These were useless too.
