The permanent thermal trip has operated on my shower

According to trouble shooting guide this is a non-user serviceable part.

Therefore the complete shower must be replaced

Surely replacement trip units can be fitted

Has anyone been successful in doing so

The permanent trip would indicate the element is dead so would be pointless changing the trip.

Following up on recommendation to visit various suppliers

It would seem to resolve this issue I require to purchase a new shower engine complete

The suggestion that the element is dead if the trip has been activated

Surely its function is to protect said element from overheating

Yes, that's how Gainsborough showers are designed.

Cheap to buy, but when anything goes wrong, you have to buy a complete new shower. (or 'engine' as they call it which is just the shower without the outer plastic case).
