Garden Wall Project - help required

yep that sounds good.

you could just use a linear aco type channel rather than the interceptor arrangement.

Yeah we did think about that but the missus overruled on aesthetics!

Sticking with the interceptor arrangement, what type, and diameter, pipe would you recommend - 80mm plastic?

How deep should we lay the pipe? The higher ground area that is being drained is approximately 90m2.

And how would we connect the drain to the surface water drainage system (i.e. the pipes in the second picture in my previous post), given the significantly larger diameter of these compared to the smaller land drain pipe?

use a 100mm pipe and a large stone backfill, like 20mm.

you can get adaptors/ couplers to connect to a standard 4'' sewer pipe. you could also put it straight into an inspection chamber.

300mm deeo would be plenty as your not draining ground water. in reality the depth with depend on your outfall depth.

Thanks for this.

Back to the wall etc, for our step section, we are using treads that are 450mm deep.

What size overhang would you recommend for treads that are this deep?

A 1'' overhand should be fine. Its up to you thoyugh, its mainly aesthetic.

More than 30mm and you could tip it when walking on the edge

not sure thats worse than falling down the steps or having the tread it flip over unto your achilles

Thanks for the replies guys - will limit the overhang to 20mm, perhaps 15mm.

In terms of concrete for the footing for the steps, we've got 4 steps, each of 100mm high, is the following ready mix product (available from B&Q) suitable for the concrete foundation?

no definately not.

A step must be laid on a good wet and strong mortar 4:1 building sand - cement would be good

Ideally some sbr added to the mix but its not worth buying some just for a couple of steps.

Thanks.

When I'm laying the croft stone bricks, as described in the attached doc (6 steps as shown on the second page), the bottom course is laid below ground level.

http://www.marshalls.co.uk/homeowne...rmation-sheets/croft-stone-garden-walling.pdf

Should this (bottom) course be back filled with the clean draining stone (as per each course above it)? Or should it be back filled with Type 1?

Similarly, what material should I use in front of the bottom course of bricks - Type 1? Soil?

use clean stone behind and use whatever you want in front

Thanks again.

We have got the bulk bags of the 10-22mm gravel to use as the clean stone.

The bags were advertised as "washed" but it appears that they've been washed using sand.

Presume the sand actually needs washed off prior to using the clean stone for the drainage behind the wall?

Any tips on best way to actually remove the sand - a hole in the bottom of the bulk bag and hose the gravel from the top, turning each layer we use 2-3 times?

If the bags are not washed stone then get the supplier to pick them up and deliver washed stone.

Stone with fines in is useless for your purpose and sifting out will be time consuming and back breaking work.
